Authentic Masculinity Self-Discipline Challenge, Week 2: Take it to Work
A Quick Re-cap of last week
OK, if you joined our AM Self-Discipline Challenge last week, you are now doing the following three things each day:
Week 1, Task 1 is you have committed to changing the way you think by eliminating the Three Big C’s: You don’t Criticize, Condemn or Complain. This is key, because what you think, you do, what you do, you become. If you train your mind not to criticize, condemn or complain, soon you won’t even want to. It can be tough, but it’s life-changing. Discipline your thoughts. Vital.
Week 1, Task 2 is to get up at a fixed time each day and make your bed. This is an early, easy win. Rack up early, easy wins and others follow. Secret Tip: The tip to getting out of bed at the same time each day is DON’T THINK ABOUT. Just, as Nike tells us, do it. Use the action of your body to jump-start your attitude.
Week 1, Task 3 is to do something physical, no matter how modest. Whatever it is, just continue for the rest of the month. Touch your toes, jump up and down in place, do some Body Weight Squats, simply 10 reps of a good stretch will do. Just get moving.
Now, we’re going to take The Self-Discipline Challenge to work.
Week 2 Task 1: “Clean up this mess!!” Clean your desk.
Clean your desk. This is another simple, easy win. Sit at your desk and take a look at your desk top (the real one, not on your computer) and ask yourself, “How can I make this better, cleaner, better organized? How can I improve this in some way?” If you’re in control of your environment, everything in your own head feels better. Take command of your environment. Clean and organize your desk. Get some window cleaner and a paper towel or even dampen a paper towel, or even take your handkerchief and wipe the desk and the computer down, then reorganize things and get them better in some way. Try to do this every week, may be on Fridays. Also, straighten your desk 5 minutes before you leave so it’s well organized when you arrive the next day. Tomorrow begins today.
Week 2 Task 2: “Thanks a lot!” Express gratitude.
This is very important—giving starts the receiving process. Express gratitude and enthusiasm through your actions or, if it is appropriate, actually say the words, “Thank you” to someone who has brought value to your life. Ensure it’s sincere, because we really should be grateful for all the good things that surround us. Be thankful to your boss for your job, be thankful for your paycheck, be thankful to whoever cleans the toilets or sweeps the floors in your building. If you’re the man who cleans the toilets in your building, say thank you to the people you see each day for bringing their own good attitudes to work. The work doesn’t dignify you, you dignify the work.
Week 2 Task 3: “Shut up!” Master the acronym W.A.I.T., which means, “Why Am I Talking?”
The tongue is the most difficult animal to tame. If we can learn to keep our mouths shut, we have tamed a wild animal. Ask yourself when you have regretted keeping silent. Now, ask yourself how many times you have regretted saying something. If you are like most of us—and you are, for as men we all share the same essential nature—you’ll realize you probably speak more than you listen and you probably don’t listen well enough. To help you become a better listener, use the following acronym to be more deliberate in your listening: Why Am I Talking? Or, W.A.I.T. Don’t talk to fill the void. Don’t talk to make yourself feel better. Don’t talk to keep anyone else at bay. Have a specific reason you are speaking, think about what you are going to say, then say it clearly and carefully. Ask yourself, “Will my comments bring value to this situation? Will my comments or questions make this situation better? Is my talking going to help someone else?” Be deliberate and speak for a reason, not just to speak.
Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly: None of us gets this right all the time.
Gentlemen, by accepting this AM Challenge, you are taking on yourself and your own life. That is noble. Your goal should be to master your appetites and lower nature so that you are in full command of yourself at all times. That is a lifelong struggle. Too often, we tell ourselves “If I can’t do it well, I won’t do it at all.” The problem with that is that we learn by getting things wrong. Get out there and make your mistakes. You’ll learn and get better. It’s all a matter of self-discipline.
Be bold, be authentic, be masculine… and discipline yourself. The world needs us all to be better men.
